A Breakthrough Week in Jakarta

ByYonex June 9, 2026June 15, 2026

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Indonesia Open offered athletes an opportunity to take another step forward, whether by reaching new milestones, building on past experiences, or inspiring the next generation through their performances.

One of the tournament’s most notable results came in men’s singles, where Victor Lai (CAN) became the first Canadian player to win a Super 1000 title. The 21-year-old continued his strong development following last year’s World Championships bronze medal, defeating a home favorite 21-19, 21-8 in front of a passionate Indonesian crowd.

“I never imagined winning a Super 1000 title. It still feels like a dream,” he said afterward.

Lai also spoke about the impact he hopes the victory will have beyond the court.

“I hope this victory inspires young players in Canada to believe in their dreams.”

In women’s doubles, Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto (JPN) captured their third BWF World Tour title together. Since forming their partnership in late 2024, the pair has continued to establish itself among the world’s leading combinations.

Facing world No.1 pair Tan Ning and Liu Sheng Shu (CHN) in the final, Fukushima and Matsumoto recovered from a 13-16 deficit in the deciding game before completing the comeback and securing the title.

Sayaka Hobara and Rui Hirokami (JPN) also recorded their best result at a Super 1000 event, reaching the semifinals for the first time.

Their run included a victory over world No.2 pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan (MAS), reflecting the progress they have made as a partnership.

In women’s singles, An Se Young (KOR) and Akane Yamaguchi (JPN) met in the final for the second consecutive week following their Singapore Open showdown. An Se Young once again demonstrated the consistency that has defined her success, earning her ninth Super 1000 title and adding another achievement to an already remarkable season.

As the season moves forward, the stories that emerged in Jakarta are far from complete. For some athletes, Jakarta reinforced steady progress already underway. For others, it offered a glimpse of what may come next. Each result became part of a larger story that continues to unfold throughout the year.

Many of those journeys are expected to continue at the Japan Open in July, where another opportunity awaits on one of badminton’s biggest stages.
